Antique Colonial Revival Sunflower Chest. This hand-crafted chest was manufactured in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, by Johnson-Handley-Johnson Co.
Sunflower chests and cupboards were once called “Hartford” or “Connecticut” furnishings. They captured the public’s attention with bold designs and connections to the nostalgic “Pilgrim” era. With the applied moldings, split spindles, bosses, and low-relief floral and vine carving, this style chest represents an innovation in decoration and form. The central panel is often decorated with three flowers on a central stem, one with rounded and two with dog-tooth-shaped pedals, flanked by asymmetrical fluted tulips. Sunflower chests have been closely associated with Wethersfield, Connecticut, and the joiner Peter Blinn (c. 1640-1725)
In addition to two drawers, the top reveals a deep cubby lined with Pacific cloth, featuring a built-in tray that slides from right to left for easy access. Functional and beautiful, this chest will be the piece that centers any space. Hand-crafted in the USA.
