Paul Kallos was a French abstract artist of Hungarian descent.

Paul Kallos was born in Hungary in the family of a rural doctor. In 1940 he entered the art school in Kiskunhalas, but did not graduate. During the war he passed through Auschwitz, where almost all of his relatives died. In 1946 he entered the School of Fine Arts in Budapest.

In 1949 Kallos, with Georges Feher, clandestinely leaves Stalinist Hungary, spends a year in a refugee camp in Austria, near Salzburg, in the French zone, then settles with the status of political refugee in Paris, in a room of Place Clichy, where he creates small-format works under precarious conditions. He often visited the Louvre, where he especially remembered Hals, Rembrandt, Tintoretto and Veronese. Since 1952, he has been renting a workshop with Raymond Goden, an artist from Quebec. Paul Kallos became a French citizen since 1974.

In 1951, four paintings by Callos were first exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. Since then, regularly, until 1983, participated in this salon. Since 1954, he collaborated with the Pierre Loeb Gallery, which held five of his personal exhibitions. Critics Pierre Dekarg and Roger van Gindertal warmly responded to his exhibition. He became friends with Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Arpad Szenes, Andrey Lansky, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Zhao Wuji, Wilfredo Lam – artists who exhibited at the Loeb Gallery or often visited it. Since 1964, after the death of Pierre Loeb, was exhibited in the gallery of Pierre Domek, from 1971 – at Nane Stern, since 1983 – in the gallery of Lef Steel.

He exhibited abroad: in 1955 in London, in 1957 in Turin, in 1958 in New York, in 1960 in Basel, in 1961 again in New York and Toronto. In 1986, together with Victor Vasarely and other Hungarian emigrant artists, he exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Budapest.

The artist’s works are in The Centre Pompidou, Paris’ Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Saint-Etienne, the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon, the Denver Art Museum, the museums of Tel Aviv, Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, Eindhoven, Rehovot, Metz , Evreux, Epinal.
